Our incredible team of 10 students, aged 9 to 12, recently took part in the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) "Submerged" Challenge — a global robotics and innovation competition where children dive into real-world problems using science, technology, and teamwork.

And what a journey it was!

For months, our devoted students spent countless hours preparing for the competition, becoming real engineers, scientists, and thinkers. They met every Sunday, jumped on Zoom calls, and dedicated hours and hours to researching, testing, and discussing ideas.

Each session brought something new: debates about sustainable robot power, searching for ocean-related problems to solve, writing emails to companies for answers, and running mini-experiments at home.

The FLL theme, "Submerged," challenged them to explore and protect the world beneath the ocean's surface.

Our team researched how marine biologists study sea life and the environmental problems they face — from noisy, polluting boats to energy waste in deep-sea exploration.

The result? Two breathtaking solutions that showcase brilliant young coding and engineering!

1. The Flying Hydro-Boat

Imagine a research vessel that is clean, quiet, and fast. Our students designed a hydrogen-powered, solar-assisted research vessel that glides smoothly above the water. This eliminates noise and pollution, allowing scientists to collect data safely and comfortably while producing only water vapour as exhaust — a true vision of eco-friendly science!

2. The Robo Crab: The Self-Sufficient Ocean Monitor

Meet the Robo Crab, our underwater explorer. Powered by piezoelectric energy — electricity created from water movement, sound, and vibrations — it's a self-sufficient robot that doesn't need batteries. It can measure temperature, pH, salinity, oxygen, and turbidity, helping scientists understand the impact of climate change.

One of our students proudly called it "a crab that never sleeps."

The Robot Missions

In addition to their innovation project, our students designed and coded a LEGO robot to complete a series of ocean-themed missions. Every gear, attachment, and line of code was crafted with care.

When it was time to compete, the robot performed flawlessly, scoring 275 points and winning the prestigious 🏆 Best Robot Design Award!

We still remember the cheers, the high-fives, and the proud smiles that filled the room.

As their coach, I can confidently say the true reward wasn't the trophy — it was the growth I witnessed.

Our students learned how to:

Work as a real engineering team — listening, sharing, and supporting each other

Solve complex problems with creativity and persistence

Present their ideas confidently to judges and peers

And above all, believe that they can change the world through innovation

Why Competitions Like This Matter

Competitions like FIRST LEGO League give children the perfect mix of fun, challenge, and purpose. They teach that technology isn't just about robots — it's about solving problems, helping people, and protecting our planet.

Through ICEskool's robotics and coding programmes, our students get the STEM skills, mindset, and confidence to become the innovators of tomorrow.

This experience has shown our team that innovation has no limits. We can't wait for the new FLL challenge in 2026 and look forward to diving into the next big problem!

ICEskool runs robotics and coding classes across Liverpool and the North West for children aged 4–15.

Every day has a structured programme:

Morning: Robotics challenges — building and programming machines with LEGO Education kits

Midday: Lunch break and free time (bring a packed lunch)

Afternoon: Coding projects — creating games, animations, and apps

Late afternoon: AI exploration and team challenges

The activities change every day. A child who comes for the full week gets a completely different experience each day — not the same workshop repeated five times.

Industry Excursions — See How Real Jobs Work

This is something most camps don't offer. On selected days, we take children on industry excursions — real visits to local tech companies, engineering firms, and digital studios across Liverpool and the North West.

Your child won't just learn about robotics and coding in a classroom. They'll walk into a workplace and see it happening for real.

What it looks like: A guided visit where children meet real engineers, developers, and tech professionals. They see the tools, the projects, and the problems these people solve every day.

Why it matters: Children who see real people doing real tech jobs think differently about their own future. It stops being abstract and starts being "I could actually do this."

Which days: Excursion days are announced when each camp is scheduled. Not every day includes an excursion — some days are fully workshop-based. The mix keeps things varied and exciting.

All excursions are fully supervised by our DBS-checked instructors. They're great.

But here's what makes STEM different:

Your child learns skills that compound over time. A robot they build today teaches them mechanics. The code they write teaches them logic. The AI project they complete teaches them critical thinking. These aren't one-off experiences — they're building blocks for everything that comes next.

And honestly? Kids who love STEM often don't feel catered for by traditional holiday activities. If your child is the one who reads the instruction manual, takes the remote control apart, or asks "but how does it actually work?" — this camp is designed for them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age are ICEskool holiday camps for?
Our holiday camps are for children aged 8 and above.

Do I need to provide lunch?
Yes, please send your child with a packed lunch and a water bottle. It's hands-on, it's creative, and it teaches problem-solving in a way that sitting in front of a textbook never will.

ICEskool runs RoboZone classes for ages 4–15 across Liverpool — in Formby, Waterloo, and Bridge Chapel. Groups are small (never more than 10–12 children), and every session has two instructors. That matters, because a 5-year-old building their first robot needs different support than a 13-year-old programming autonomous machines.

Pricing starts from £5 for a taster session, with 6-week courses at £72.

Coding Classes

Coding is the literacy of the 21st century. Some of the most valuable learning happens when children are curious, engaged, and given the chance to build, experiment, solve problems, and create something with their own hands. That is exactly what we aim to provide through our robotics, coding, and AI sessions.

Being recognised by the Children’s University means that the learning children do with us outside school hours is now also being formally celebrated and recognised.

What Is the Children’s University?

The Children’s University is an organisation that encourages children to take part in high-quality learning experiences outside the classroom. Children collect credits in their Passport to Learning, and these credits can contribute towards special milestones and even graduation ceremonies.

This makes learning even more exciting and meaningful. It shows children that the time they spend developing new skills, exploring ideas, and trying something challenging really matters.

Why This Matters for Children

At ICEskool, children do much more than just sit and watch.

They build robots, explore coding, solve practical challenges, work together, test ideas, make mistakes, improve, and try again. In the process, they develop skills that are becoming more and more important in the modern world:

problem-solving

creativity

logical thinking

resilience

teamwork

confidence with technology

These are not just “nice extras.” They are valuable life skills.

In a world where technology, robotics, and AI are changing the future very quickly, children need opportunities to understand and explore these areas in a practical and inspiring way. We want children to feel that technology is something they can create with, not just consume.

Why This Matters for Parents

For parents, this validation gives extra reassurance that your child is taking part in a learning experience that is recognised, meaningful, and beneficial.

It is not just a fun club, although fun is a very important part of what we do.

It is also a place where children can grow in confidence, gain real skills, and now receive recognition for the effort they put in. For many children, that recognition can be highly motivating. It gives them a sense of progress and achievement and helps them feel proud of what they are learning.

What This Means at ICEskool

As a validated Children’s University Learning Destination, children attending ICEskool can collect credits for their learning with us.

That means that every session is not only a chance to enjoy robotics, coding, and AI, but also part of a wider learning journey that can be celebrated over time.

We are delighted that the work we do has been recognised in this way, and we are proud of our team for continuing to create sessions that are:

fun

practical

hands-on

inspiring

future-focused

Looking Ahead

This is just one more step in our mission to help children discover the world of technology in a creative, engaging, and accessible way.

We are excited to see our students grow, learn, collect credits, and feel proud of their achievements.

Thank you to all the families who support us and to every child who comes to ICEskool ready to build, explore, and learn.

We cannot wait to continue this journey with you.

Join ICEskool

If you would like your child to experience hands-on learning in robotics, coding, and AI, we would love to welcome you.

You can find out more about our classes, venues, and trial sessions at www.iceskool.co.uk
</turbo:content>
